DISCOVERY OF EGYPTIAN TREASURES.

WORLD-WIDE INTEREST AROUSED. London, December 24. The “Daily Mail” states that the extraordinary interest which is being taken throughout the world in Lord Carnarvon’s discoveries in the Valley of the Kings has led the Egyptian Government to erect a barrier to prevent people entering the tomb and spoiling the treasures. Already there are great demands for hotel accommodation in Luxor and district, and a pilgrimage will begin ' on a large scale as soon as it is possible to admit visitors. Lord Carnarvon was received by their Majesties at Buckingham Palace and vividly described the treasures. Queen Mary was particularly interested in Lord Carnarvon’s reports that a cable message from Mr Carter, who is still in Egypt, might be construed to mean that he has made further discoveries. It appears that for the first time the fabric in which Egyptian sovereigns were dressed has been found. The dresses of Tut-ankh, Amen's queen are of diaphaneous material, ns portrayed in Egyptian, monuments, but never before handled. So beautiful and delicate is the workmanship that their preserva- > . lion is a matter of great difficulty, as objects long kept in a vault are liable to fall to dust upon exposure to the air. On the back of the £iug’s throne Is a unique portrait of the King in precious stones. There is nothing to compare with its beauty among former finds in Egypt. Life-size..statues of the Pharaohs are known to have been fashioned at that period from actual plaster masks, thus a true portrait has been discovered now of Tut-ankh-Auien. The excavators have also discovered how the Egyptians lighted their palaces with twisted linen bands soaked in oil held up hr metal. “The Egyptologist” hopes that the papyri will throw new light on_ the period.
