ACCIDENT AT ASHHURST.
An accident with fatal results occurred at Ashhurst at about 11.30 o’clock yesterday morning when a man named James Groves, sustained injuries as a result of his being run over by a motor ear, and expired at the Palmerston Hospital at 3 p.m. Groves was walking along the centre of the road near the intersection of the Ashhurst and Gorge roads, when a motor ear appeared, coining towards him from the direction of the Gorge. There was also a motor ear coming behind deceased, and the driver blew the horn. It is thought that the man did not hear the horn sounded, nor was he aware of the ear approaching until it was ten yards away, and then realising how close it was, be darted to the side of the car coming from the other direction. His head was struck by the radiator, and the man also had a leg broken. It is understood that so far as the driver of the car is concerned, the accident was entirely unavoidable. Tt is believed that the deceased was a married man about 47 rears of age and resided at Paliiatua. — Times.
