FOXTON STATE SCHOOL

BREAKING-UP AND PRIZE GIVING CEREMONY.

The breaking-up and prize-giv-ing ceremony n connection with the local Slate school took place in the Town Hall yesterday afternoon before a large assemblage of parents and scholars. The children were in happy mood in anticipation of the holidays. Mr Hornblow, chairman of committee, presided and briefly addressed the children and parents. Mr Banks, headmaster, in addressing the assemblage, said that out of a. roll number of 430, 128 had not missed more than live half-days during the year. He thanked the parents for their co-operation in tliis connection. Eighteen scholars had gained proficiency certificates, and seven competency. He paid a fine tribute to the staff for their loyal co-operation. He agreed with the chairman re prizes and Imped (he time would come when (his custom would cease and that the children as a whole, together with their parents enjoy a general outing. Referring to the school work lie said the object was to build character so that each child should he taught to walk nobly before God and man. He again thanked parents, staff, and committee for their hearty co-operation.

Mr J. Linklater, M.P., congratulated the school upon the work accomplished during the year. He stressed the need of education to fit (gich boy and girl to become good and useful citizens'in after life. He hoped that the good , time they were anticipating during the holidays would be fully realsed and that they would return to ther duties in the new year invigorated. He then presented- the prizes and certificates to the successful scholars who were greeted with salvoes of applause. As eaelUclass came on the stage, it rendered one of the school songs, which wore much appreciated. At the conclusion the National Anthem was sung and cheers given for the staff, committee and donors of prizes/

On Tuesday afternoon the infants were entertained by Father Christmas at the school and each infant received a gift from the Christmas tree. The prize list will appear in next issue.
