ONE TENTH THE PEOPLE, SIX ) TIMES THE MURDERS. CLEVELAND AND LONDON. AN INTERESTING COMPARISON. The London “Evening Standard” I of July sth, 1922, prints some in- j teres tiny statistics which are eloquent of the ‘‘benefits” of Prohibition. “In 1920 Cleveland, Ohio, with a population of 800,090 had six times as many murders as London, with a population of 8,000,000. Cleveland had thirty-one robberies per annum to Liverpool’s one, yet Liverpool’s population is to that of Cleveland only as three to two; and Liverpool is not precisely what you would call a community of saints. In murders Cleveland did not do quite as well: it had only three times as many as Liverpool. More robberies and assaults to rob are committed in Cleveland every year than in all England, Scotland and Wales combined. Tn Cleveland 2,327 automobiles were stolen in 1919, in Liverpool only ten. And the American writer, who supplies us with these figures, describes Cleveland as ‘one of our fairest and most typical cities!" Thus “Evening Standard,” with biting sarcasm. Comment is really needless. If Cleveland is one of the fairest and “most typical” cities of the U.S.A. under Prohibition, then may heaven help those cities which are not “fair” and which fall short of “typical” standard! And heaven help the sane, clean, wholesome cities of New Zealand if the same withering blight is permitted to descend upon them! Keep New Zealand law-abiding. Strike out the two bottom lines. 100 Messrs Mounsey and Co. advertise an unreserved auction sale of general drapery (on behalf of Mr Burrell, who is giving up business) at Thomson’s yard, Whyte Street, on Monday next at 1 p.m.
