THE PORT OF FOXTON.
At last night’s meeting of the Palmerston Chamber of Commerce a letter was received from Mr Goldingham, enclosing a letter from .Messrs Holm and Co., English shipping agents, with particulars of a \essel suitable for negotiating the Foxton bar. Air Goldingham suggested that the Chamber deal with Messrs Holm and Co. direct, pointing out that a vessel of 400 tons and drawing Bf't. Gin. of water would be a payable proposition for trading with Southern ports. The president read Messrs Holm and Co.’s letter, which contained details of a vessel 120 feet long, with a beam of 20 feet and a speed of nine knots. Such a boat, equipped with steam winches of 3 tons capacity, would cost approximately £II,OOO to £J ],500. In commenting mi the letter. Air Young staled that the Chamber was indebted to Air Goldingham for the interest he had taken but be suggested that the communication be referred to the shipping committee of the Chamber. It had been found that there was no money available for a company to purchase a steamer, while there was ample support from shipping firms provided the bar could be made safe for their vessels. If the bar could be made lift, deep, there would be plenty of ships. Air J. Aitehison thought it was merely a waste of time to attempt to make a port at Foxton. At the same time, it would be possible to have one at the heads, and he considered t lie Chamber should move in that direction. Air Young said that was what they were working for. They aimed at getting boats of from 500 to 900 tons. On the motion of Mr Aitehison it was agreed that the matter be referred to the shipping committee and that a letter of thanks be sent to Air Goldingham.
