FIRE BOARD.

SPECIAL MEETING. A special meeting of tho Foxton Fire Board was held on Tuesday :if'toiiioi.ii. to furtlior consider the pliins for I lie new (ire station. Six member- attended, Mr D. J. Bews ( Wellnglon) being absent. The chairman (Mr Chrvstall) briefly out lined the -leps- taken so far in regard to the plans and eX|.res>ed }ii> opinion that the station should lie proceeded with on the lines of the present plans and specifications.

Mr Smith —ai.| he did not agree with the plans and suggested certain alterations. He submitted a rough -ketch in explanation. Mr F. ('. Cray -aid he considered I he present plans were very unsatisfactory and he did not agree with a par.-emonioits policy. They were building a -tation for posterity and ii was important to make sure they had I lie best and most convenient arrangements before the work commenced. He submitted a tentative sketch plan by Mr Bews similar to Mr Smith's ideas and which lie strongly favoured. lie thought h would be a great mistake to have the conveniences at the rear of the building.

Mr E. C. Rowe spoke in support of the suggested alterations. Mr Hornblow suggested that the lcnn-io at the back be done away with and the roof and back wall be extended to that extent. The specifications provided work which could lie carried out at Some future time. What was wanted was ample space within the building to avoid structural alterations later. By this mean- .they could keep within the e-limate provided. The chairman stated that he would not oppo.-e. any alteration that, did 1101 increase the cost of iiie building. Tie objected strongly however, to I lit iiicluson of a passage of three feet width (giving separate access to the conveniences) in Mr Bews’ plan, us this meant increasing the width of the building. Mr TTornblow urged that the width of the building be increased to 30 feet.

The general opinion was that the cost of the new proposed lay-out would not exceed the estimate provided for the building as several economies could be effected. After further discussion, Mr Smith moved and Mr fray .seconded, that “new plans he prepared on the lines suggested: that all interior walls be built of wood; that entrance to office he off engine room only; that tlie side brick walls be of uniform height, viz. 11 feel, for j heir full length: length of building to he f>l feet over all, by 30 feet width over all."

Mr Bryant moved an amendment seconded by the chairman, “that the orginal plans and specifications he adhered to." The motion was carried. A sub-committee consisting of Messrs TTornblow and Smith was set up, to confer with Air West (architect) re the preparation of new plans, which will he submitted to a further meeting for confirmation.
