A sensational arrest was made on Thursday at Wellington, when .Limes George Bruce, who for some time past has acted as secretary of tlie Wellington Waterside Workers’ Liiion was apprehended on a charge of stealing funds of the union. The accused was brought before Mr W. 0. Riddell, S.M., on Thursday afternoon when he was charged “Iluit on or about .July 21, 1922, and mi divers dates between .July 1, 1922 and duly 21, 1922, at Wellington, he did steal Hie sum of !S4ti 14s HHd of the money.- of one George Clarence Thomson and others, known as ihe Wellington Waterside Workers’ Gnion." Bruce, who i> 45 years of age, and a native of Ireland, was palpably nervous when he appeared before the Magistrate. Senior Detective Lewis, who appeared for the police, asked for a remand until November 1, which wa> granted. Mr 11. E. O’Leary, who-appeared tor the accused, asked for bail. He said i.kau these chaiges had been banging over the accused for some considerable time. He was a widower with four children. Senior Detective Lewis said that lie had no objection to bail, as he bad no cause to fear that the accused would make any attempt to leave the country. Bail was allowed in I'2OU and two surieties of £IOO, or one of £2OO.
