THEFT OF FOWLS.
.ACCUSED FINED £5 OR ONE
MONTH
The beat of the local police is not confined to the Afain thoroughfare. Necessity at times takes them to out-of-the-way places. Last Saturday evening, at about 8.15. 0'clock Constables Owen and O’Donnoghue were, proceeding- along the water front near the N.Z. Shipping Co.’s shed. Nearby is the fowl house connected. with and at the rear of the Family Hotel. The attention of the constables was attracted by a disturbance among the feathered family. They waited results and presently noticed a form emerge through some corrugated iron and make for the shelter of some lupin. There was a brief chase and a capture. The Heeling one was hampered with two birds which didn’t assist his flight and his clot lies and face wen* somewhat damaged in an endeavour to shake off his pursuers. At the local police .court yesterday, before Messrs Alf. Fraser and Robertson, J.’sP., the sequel was revealed, when William Charles Healey, pleaded guilty to the charge of theft of two fowls, the property of R. Palmer, licensee of the Family Hotel, valued at 10/-.
Evidence was given by the police on the lines set out above. Accused was fined Co and 10/value of the fowls, in default one month’s imprisonment. One month was allowed in which to pay the line.
