LONDON, Oct. 16. The amnesty expired on Sunday, but the rebels showed little disposition to accept it. A considerable number of Irregulars in the West Cork area have surrendered their arms under the new amnesty offer.—A. and N.Z. cable. NATIONALS AMBUSHED. LONDON. Oct. 13. Ail advance party of the Nationals was ambushed while searching the Glen of Aherlow, in Tipperary, at the foot of the Galtoe mountains. A rifle and machine gun duel ensued, lasting half an hour. The Nationals had little cover, but lost only one killed.—A. and N.Z. rable. THE REFUGEE PROBLEM. APPEAL MADE FOR HELP. GENEVA, Oct. 10. The vast ness of the Near Eastern refugee problem is emphasised by a telegram which L)r. Nansen sent I rum Constantinople to the secretariat to the League of Nations saying: "Threequarters of a million of refugees from Asia Minor are distributed throughout Greece, Thraeo and the islands, mostly women and children without money, food, shelter or clothing. The Government relief organisations are doing their utmost to cope with their urgent necessities-, hut organisation of relief on n much vaster scale is essential to avert a catastrophe.” Dr. Nansen appeals urgently for public- lands.—A. and N.Z. cable. FREEDOM OF THE STRAITS. FRENCH AND RUSSIAN INTERESTS IDENTICAL. PARIS, Oct. 16. M. Herriot, a member of the Chamber of Deputies, who has returned from Russia, states tliar despite her errors in supporting Wrangel and Deniken, France lias the highest moral prestige in Russia. “The British Straits policy is the greatest menace for Russia, who, having lost Riga, has only Constantinople for an outlet. UNION CONFERENCE TO-MORROW LONDON, Oct. 16. Mr Austen Chamberlain will address a conference of Unionist Ministers and members at the Carlton Club qn Thursday. A vote is expected on the party’s election policy.
