RAILWAYS ACT.
PROPOSED AMENDMENTS. WELLINGTON, Oct. IG. An amendment to the Government Railways Act was brought down in the House of Representatives to-night hv Governor-General’s message. The Hon. 1). H. Guthrie explained that the Bill referred to the carriage of lime, the Government having been “got at” by farmers ordering more than they required and then handing the balance over to merchants, who were able to dispose of it on better terms than it they ordered it themselves. The Bill also gave effect to the arrangement made between the Engineers’, Firemen and Cleaners’ Association and the department. There was also a provision for appointing scrutineers in connection with the superannuation fund. The Bill was read a first time.
