OBITUARY.

FREDERICK EDWARD JENKS, AGED 68 YEARS. It is with regret that we record the death of Mr Frederick Edward .leaks, which took place at his late residence, Linton Street, Palmerston North, yesterday, aged 68 wars. For the past few months Mr ■h'nks had suffered from periodical heart attacks, from which he finally succumbed. Up to a few years ago Mr Jenks was one of Foxton’s most prominent and public-spirited townsmen and his passing will he regretted throughout the town and district. The late Mi- Jenks was born in Flintshire, North Wales, and was educated in the old city of Chester, where he served an apprenticeship to the trade of plumbing and painting. He came to New Zealand per ship “Cathcart” in 1874, arriving at Lyttelton. He spent a short time in Christchurch, Auckland and Ohinemuri, finally settling in Foxton in 1876, where he established a lucrative business, until his retirement a few years ago. For many years, he took an active part in local public affairs, first as a member of the old Town Board and was elected a member of the Borough Council upon its constitution and upon which he served for many years, finally occupying the Mayoral chair. He took a keen interest in educational matters and was a member of the School Committee for many years. His other activities included the Licensing Bench, Racing Club and other minor institutions. In church life he was a.member of All Saints’ vestry. As a business man and a citizen be was held in the highest esteem for his integrity. He was a man of strong personality and once his mind was made up there was no vacillating. He was, as is characteristic of the Welsh, passionately fond of music and devoted to his wife and family. As a tribute to his public-spiritedness, a street bears bis name and will keep him in local remembrance. In common with the Foxton public, we extend to the widow and family our sincere sympathy. Upon his retirement from business a few years ago the late Mr Jenks resided for a time in Wellington, subsequently removing to Palmerston North.

The funeral will take place tomorrow and will leave All Saints Church, Foxton, for the local cemetery at 1.45 p.m.
