BOWLING.
OPENING OF THE LOCAL GREEN. . Ideal bowling weather prevailed for the opening of the Foxton Bowling Club’s green and the ladies cro.(juei courts yesterday afternoon, and the function was considered 'one of the most successful- yet helcE A record number of visitors were present, including non-howlers, and a feature of the gathering was the number of visiting ladies present. Rinks representing Palmerston N. ,(2), Feilding, (1), Levin (3), Shannon (3), Terrace End (1), participated in the play, besides which a number of players from widely .scattered elubs- were-found a place ,on the green. The president (Mi- D. Christie) in an appropriate speech of welcome, expressed the Club’s pleasure at seeing so many visitors present. He referred to the work the members of the committee, with the assistance of a few other members, had done in the preparation of the green for opening day and hoped the bowYens present would find it in good playing condition. He took opportunity to present to Mr C. Pearson the Wilford Cup, a trophy won by Mr Pearson last season in the handicap singles competition. After declaring the green open for play, the president presented the trophies won during the past season by members of the ladies’ Croquet Club — a very acceptable and handsome set of articles —and formally declared the courts opened. The grounds presented a very animated appearance, the full green being occupied by bowlers, and the pavilion and numerous seats close by the croquet, courts being well filled with onlookers.
Afternoon tea —a big problem with so many present —was capably handled by members of the Croquet Club, with the assistance of a number (if other ladies and was much appreciated. The following are the scores of the various rinks: — Mason (Feilding) 27. .Jno. Ross (Foxton) 16. Wallace (Terrace End) 2.1, Admore (Foxton) 19. Pearson (Foxton) 24, Fargher (Shannon) 22. Trott (Palmerston N.) 18. Bull (Levin) 17. A. Pickering (Palmerston N.) 19, A. Hawke (Levin) 14. W. McKegg (Shannon) 21, Shalcrass (Foxton) 14. Clements (Levin) 21, Gunning (Shannon) 17. The play all through was evenly contested as the scores indicate, and in ..t wo of the games the result was decidedly in doubt until the last head had been played. ' 7: The function was voted a decided success, and augurs well for the bowling season, thanks being due to E those who had the arrangements in Hand and to the ladies who so capably carried out. the onerous -aqd strenuous duties g£. attending to the wants of the “inner man.”
Shannon Club open their green on Wednesday next and local players desiring to make the trip should communicate with the secretary (Mr Roore). CROQUET. In opening the croquet courts the president expressed pleasure at seeing so many visitors present, and said, lie hoped -that many such visits would be made during the season. He regretted "that a larger playing area was not available and said lie intended using his best endeavours during his term of office to arrange a conference with the Tennis Club for the purchase of the land adjoining the green, in order that extra space will he made available for courts, and at the same time provide accommodation for the Tennis Club. The trophies won last year were then presented. Mrs Perreau (president of the Croquet Club) rolled the first hall, and the courts were declared open. A “break” competition was held during the afternoon, resulting in Miss B. Spoil’s (Foxton) winning in the “A”, section, and Mrs Shortall (Feilding) in the “B” section. Visitors were present from Otaki, Levin, Feilding, and North End.
The Longbum Croquet Club open their courts on Saturday next, and a number of local ladies intend making the-, trip., _ .. ~ Players “are 'informed' that the Twenty-minute Tournament commences; on the local green on Wednesday "ftexf. Those intending to participate in this’Y:ompetition are requested to be on the green not later than 2.30 if possible.
