OPERATIONS FOR PAST 10 YEARS.
Speaking at Levin last night, Mr Massey mentioned that the total amount of money spent during the last'ten years on public works, in spite -of • the war and other difficulties, had been £18,178,422 (not including- additions to open lines, telegraph extension, immigration workers dwellings or school buildings). Some 235 miles of railway had been built and 50 miles constructed, ■ but not yet handed over to the Railways Department, also a large amount of formation works. The Government had made provision for the development of 29,000 horse power at hydro-electric stations and • there would be anothe/ 24,000 horse power when works now in hand .were completed ill twelve months. Then 5,100 miles of road had been constructed, 2,500 miles metalled, 21 bridges constructed and 100 miles of irrigation wat-er-races dug. The total number of public buildings built in the period had been 283.
