STATEMENT BY MR MASSEY.
WELLINGTON, Sept. 27. In reply to Mr Wilford in tho House of Representatives to-day Mr Massey said that the news regarding the Near East situation which came to him as head of the Government yesterday was not very reassuring. To-day he had not received any information, and he hoped that no news was good news. They had not yet asked anyone to enlist in the suggested contingent. The timo had not arrived for that, and there was no desire to unnecessarily alarm tho people. At the same time the numbers volunteering were particularly gratifying as no sacrifice wo could make would be too great to help the Empire to which we belong. As soon as be received any news of a reassuring character, lie would give it to the House. Tho Minister of Defenco stated that tho enrolments to date were as follows: —Officers, 853; other ranks, 12,156; nurses, 394; chaplains, 11; total, 13,414.
