BRITISH SHIPS SEIZED.
ALLEGATIONS’ OF SMUGGLING. WASHINGTON, Sept. 21. The Associated Press Association understands that the British Government is asking to. information about the seizures of British shipping outside United States waters by the United States prohibition navy on ‘ charges of alleged attempted smuggling. While Britain is not sympathetic to the smugglers, she considers a larger question is involved if the United States extends her jurisdiction beyond the recognised three mile limit at pleasure without consulting other maritime nations. Britain is anxious to reach an understanding, on which Mr Hughes (Secretary of State) is willing to negotiate.—A. and N.Z. cable.
