BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY.

A general meeting of members of the above Society was held last night, Mr Perreau presiding. Accounts were submitted for payment, including £ll 14s Od for timber guards for trees, and £97 Is 7d for concrete steps and paths at Ihakara Garden (old cemetery). It was decided to hold over final payment for contract at Ihakara Garden until the work had been passed by Mr Climie. The Chairman said the sub-com-mittee had inspected Easton Park, and recommended that no further^ expenditure lie incurred there present. Mr Christie submitted a scheme of duties for caretaker, and after discussion it was decided to call applications for the position, the work to be restricted to two halfdays per week, and the work to be done to be indicated by the Chairman and Mr Timeman. Mr Hornblow said the Borough Council should subsidise this work £ for £, as was done at Levin and in other towns. It was resolved that a deputation consisting of the Chairman, Rev, Walton, Messrs Hornblow and Christie, wait upon the Council and request financial assistance in this connection. Mr Trueman suggested that a definite sum, say £lO, be asked for, as the Council had granted a similar amount to the Rifle Club. Resolved to ask the Borough Co- * uneil to lay on water to Ihakara Garden and Easton Park. The notice of motion to be moved by Mr Chrystall to amend the •Society’s rules to allow money to be spent for purposes other than beautifying was introduced. 'The Chairman said a .sum of money had been collected by the Football Club from matches played at-.Easton Park which was to be used for the erection of a dressing room. Mr Hornblow said that the-sug-gested alteration to the rule would uneLermine the constitution of the Society, and create a dangerous precedent. If this amendment were adopted, applications frqai other deserving sports bodies would be received for conveniences, which could not be denied. He hoped that £IOO would be set aside for beautifying Victoria Park. If the Society held £2O from the Football Club, that amount- should be spent on the object for which it was raised. Public conveniences should be the concern of the Council, and not- the Beautifying Society. Air Trueman questioned the legality of spending- the Society’s funds on fencing and steps at Ihakara Gardens. -Air Hornblow said that there was no comparison between lhat work and the erection of public conveniences. / The Chairman said the Mayor aad suggested moving a shed from the Council property to Easton Park, and the money raised by the footballers could be used for this purpose. Rev. Walton said the money raised by the Football Club should have been handed to the Borough Council, and not the Society. He was opposed to amending the Society’s rule as suggested, as it would open the way to a bad precedent. Others spoke in opposition to the proposed amendment to the rule, and it was moved that the matter be held over until a further general meeting, in order to give the mover ,-in opportunity of being present and io express his views. Other minor matters were discussed and the meeting rose.
