THE PRICE OF FLOUR.
EXPLANATION BY MINISTER. WELLINGTON, Sept. 20. The Hon. E. P. Lee, Minister of Industries and Commerce, made a statement in the House to-day on the subject of some remarks recently made by Mr Witty (Riccarton) regarding the price'of flour. That gentleman had stated that the Board of Trade had fixed the maximum price of flour at £lB per ton, and that when the millers reduced the price to £l6 10s they were told by tho chairman of the hoard that they must not sell below £lB per ton. In the course of his reply, the Hon. Leo said he had discussed the matter with the chairman of the Board of Trade, who emphatically denied that any compulsion was brought to bear by the board at any time during its existence to compel millers to sell at a fixed price. The chairman of the board had further informed him that he had at times been requested to fix a minimum price, but had invariably refused to recommend such a course. The Board of Trade, added the Minister, had no power to fix a minimum price and if it attempted to do so it would be inffective.
