FROG A FOOT LONG.

NATURALIST IN SOLOMONS. SYDNEY, Aug. 18. “We penetrated country in the Solomon Islands where white men had never before set loot, and found tribes of cannibals. The natives in those parts were hostile and savage.” Mr E. 0. Armvtage, a naturalist, who returned from a six months’ tour of the Solomon Islands to-day, made this announcement. He said that the natives which he met in places in the Solomon Islands were cannibals, and although it was very awkward to become acquainted with them there was no need to resort to firearms. “At one time I tried to take photos, of the natives, who were known to- be cannibals, but when they saw the camera they made a headlong rush into the sea. It was a difficult task to barter with them, although I was successful in obtaining several types of old weapons. “My object in making the journey was to obtain curios which will be exhibited in the Melbourne Museum. Among my collection are some very valuable beetles. “I also succeeded in capturing a specimen of the frog family which is about on-C? foot long and is the biggest frog in the world. It is exactly the same as the frog which inhabits Australian waterholes except for its size. It is pi a brown colour.” The Troides Victoria Regina butterfly is also among Mr Armytage’s collection. This insect is of a beautiful green and gold tint.
