BOROUGH FOREMAN’S REPORT.

At Monday night’s meeting of the Borough Council, the borough foreman reported as follows on work done during the past month: —Repairing footpaths and road, Main Street, clearing slips in drains in Johnston and Spring Streets and Avenue Road, also repairing banks ■ d drains where necessary’. Carting and spreading metal, Moutoa Road and Union Street. Planting pine trees on wn'ter tower reserve: carting and spreading clay in Cook and Duncan Streets; tarring fence on Council section; mowing and doing general maintenance work. The trees planted on the reserve appear to be doing well in spite of the dry wea'ther but there is evidence of a coxv having been iramping over them recently. The ■fid dividing fence will have to be repaired to prevent this. The very’ heavy rain on the 21st August caused a lot of damage to the banks >f drains in Avenue Road and John--don Street. It appears to be the custom with many owners of property fronting drains to let 'the hedge trimmings fall in and leave them there for the roadman to move. This results in slips and.wash-outs when we get a good downpoui’. We have spi’ead a few loads of clay on Cook Street where Ithe new metal is still loose and also half-a-dozen loads on Duncan Street. The weather having been so dry, we have made uo use of the x’oad grader but this work could be gone on with given -nit-able weather, either with horse >r motor power. The work of con- ■ reting footpaths fronting proper'ies of". Messrs Perreau and the C. VI. Ross Co., Main Street, has been carried out by Mr Humt in a very satisfactory manner. We shall need ;o top-dress portions of Main St. footpath during the coming sea- £ -on. That portion of 'the Avenue Road footpath from Hall Street to ■he windmill is also in need of atention. This particular length of oath was never properly finished •wing to the shortage of tar at the time and other work since taking •irecedonce of it. Tn adopting the report it was deoiled to take steps to stop 'the blocking of drains with tree trimmings; also that a motor lorry be given a trial for one fiay in conjunction with grading. \
