AUGUST GRADING RETURNS

Hemp.—The total number of bales graded was 3,339 as compared with 2,795 for the corresponding month of last year, an increase of 544 hales. For the twelve months muling 31st August, 1922, the number of bales graded was 62,573 as compared with 64,733 for the previous twelve months, a decrease of 2,160 hales. Tow. —During the month 911 bales of tow were graded as compared with 579 for the same month last year, an increase of 332 bales. For the (welve months ending 31st August, 1922, the number of bales graded was 14,541 as compared with 14,307 for the previous twelve months, an -increase of 234 bales. Stripper Slips.—During the month there were no stripper slips graded as compared with 54 for the corresponding month last year. For the twelve months ending 31st August, 1922, the number of bales graded was 323 as compared with 1,985 for the previous twelve months, a decrease of 1,662 bales. One bale at Auckland, eight hales at Foxton and 29 bales at Wellington were rejected. The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: — Good fair 601 (532), high fair 2,085 (1,302), low fair 539 (490), common 77 (311), rejected 38 (50), a total of 3,339 bales, being an increase of 544 hales.
