SWAT THAT FLY.
HOW TO MAKE TANGLEFOOT. Dr R. J. Till yard, of ihe Crawihron Institute, supplies llie following formula for making “tanglefoot” for killing house flies : 1. lies in, 8 parts; rape-seed oil, -1 parts, honey, 1 part. 2. Castor-oil, 12 parts; resin, 27 parts. In formula No. 1, melt the oil and resin together, and then add the honey. In formula No. 2, melt the oil and resin together. No doubt honey could be also added to No. 2 with advantage, as it is very attractive to house flies. I should suggest adding three parts of honey in formula No. 2. The melting should be done gently, in an old saucepan, the resulting mixture is excessively sticky, so that the saucepan cannot lie easily cleaned and used again, unless repeatedly boiled with water. The method of application is to prepare a series of fairly stout wires, from one to three feet long according to the vertical space available, and hang these about the room infested with flies, at a suitable distance above one’s head, around the gas jets, etc. The flies prefer to light upon a wire rather than any other surface, and will quickly he caught and killed. As sooii as the wire is full of flies, it should be thrown away or cleaned, and fresh tanglefoot substituted until all the Hies are settled. Tf this is done with the lirst brood of flies now about to appear, it will often greatly decrease the whole of the summer broods.
