THE TEETH OF SCHOOL CHILDREN.
At last night's School Committee meeting a letter was read from the Board, asking whether the Committee decidei'T'to avail themselves of a nurse to attend to the teeth of the local school children, and if so, to secure a suitable room anil lind suitable accommodation for the nurse in the town. At the invitation of the Chairman, Dr. Rowley was in attendance, and was asked to express his* views on the subject. Dr. Rowley gave an interesting outline of the method adopted in treating the teeth of children in the Horowhenua district by Mr McKenzie. The system there was Uiat the children between 6 and 9 years of age were treated at an annual fee of £.l, and in estimate of the work for children above that age was given to ilie parents. In hi- opinion the work propo.-ed t<> be done by the nurses should be under the direction of a fully qualified dentist. .Dr. Rowley answered a number of question.-, and was thanked for his attendance.
The subject was discussed at length, and it was pointed out that parents could please themselves whether the work- was done by the nurse, which wa.- without cost. One committeeman stated that he~*'* v . had seven children, and the dental tees were a costly iLem. He would cot, however, care to have his children treated except bv a duly qualified dentist. There were others who could not afford to pay a dentist, and who might he pleased to get the work done for nothing. It was decided to inform the Board that a room would be avail- 1 able at the school for the nurse.
