A rent of £52 per annum for permission to erect a small fruit stand in Broadway, Newmarket, was refused by the Borough Council. The Lord .Mayor of Sydney, as chairman of the Armenian relief fund appeal for sending a relief ship to Armenia, says it is hoped to send a cargo of 4000 tons of foodstuffs and clothing, of which New Zealand has promised to contribute 1000 tons, which will be sent to Sydney at the cost of the New Zealand Government. Values for ox and cow beef at the Westfield (Auckland) fat stock sales on Wednesday were lower than last week’s rates, although the prices for hoifers were maintained. Extra choice ox realised £1 4s per 1001 b, other grades bringing from 18s to £1 3s according to quality. There was a keen demand for sheep, prime mutton being firmer by 2s to 3s per head. Wethers sold for £1 2s 6d to £1 15s 3d, and) ewes from 18s to £1 5s 9d. The prices for lambs ranged from 13s to £1 5s 9d. A further improvement in rates for pigs was realised. Choppers and bacon pigs brought from £3 10s to £4 11s. What appears to have been a case of horse-theft occurred near Christchurch last Thursday night (states the Press). Four draught' horses (two mares and two geldings), were missed on Friday morning. Inc owner thought file animals had broken out and strayed away, but on Monday morning one "of the missing horses turned up with a tag on its tail bearing the number 7. The inference is that the horses were taken and sold at auction out of the district, and that the one which returned had found an open gate and left its new owner. The matter is being investigated by the police.
