ENGINEER’S REPORT.'
The water and drainage engineer reported at last night’s Council meeting as follows: — The sewer down Lady’s Mile has been completed. Total length being 28-J chains. Cost £lB7 2s Id. While awaiting the arrival of six inch concrete pipes, all lines of proposed extensions have been cleared in readiness. A further supply of pipes is expected to-morrow, when work will be re-started on Whittaker Street South, where di'ain is already opened and given line weather steady progress should be maintained on works. With the exception of outfall to river all work at the tanks' has now been completed. The outfall drain from the water tower to river, a length of seven chains, has been completed. The third artesian well has been connected to collecting tank, and work previously done has been gone over and defects remedied. The remaining 8 inch and 6 inch steel pipes have been laid in Union Street, and tested. The contractor for the tower is expected to arrive within the next few days, when the tests can be made.
The Mayor and Cr. Srnih referred to the necessity for pumping the water in the Main Street mains in ease of fire and it was decided to make provision for this. In reply to Cr. Whibley, the engineer sahi-ihe cost of carrying out the work in Lady’s Mile was £45 under the estimate. The report was adopted.
