A shocking fatality occurred at Trenbham late yesterday afternoon, when an ex-soldier patient of the Trenthnm Military Hospital was run over by a train, and so badly muitilated that the identity of the deceased could not be established last evening fill after telephonic communication with the city had been disconnected. The up-train to Wairarapa, which left Wellington at 4.16 p.m., was passing over the level crossing about 100 yards from the Trentham station at 4.45 p.m., when an exsoldier, wearing the regulation blue clothes of the military hospital, was run over by the engine and several carriages. When the remains were extricated the features of the deceased were so knocked about, that no one at the military hospital could positively identify ti e body. Several of the patients had been granted leave to attend the Welling-ton-Ha'wke’s Ray football match, and were not cxjrected to arrive back at th'e hospital till nearly 11.30 o'clock last night. It was then proposed to call the roll to ascertain, who was missing, thus making it possible to establish the identity of the deceased.
