MR NEWMAN’S RETIREMENT.
AN APPRECIATION. In the retirement of Mr E. Newman from the Manawatu seat at the close of the present Parliament, the House of Representatives will lose one of its most useful working members. The term “working” is used in this instance advisedly, for the reason that it very often happens that with the general public bilking is confused with working in estimating the services of members of Parliament. Mr Newman has never been a great talker though his speeches have always commanded respect and have been much above the average in quality of the speeches usually heard in Parliament, but he has been a sound and pi’actical worker in those branches of Parliamentary life which do not come conspicuously under public notice. His has been a useful if not spectacular Parliamentary career, and it is generally recognised that had his health permitted he has been on more than one occasion within reach of Ministerial rank. In Mr Newman’s retirement the farming communtiy in particular will lose one of the ablest of its champions in Parliament. Mr Linklater, who is to be the Reform i andidate for the Manawatu seat, is admirably qualified to represent a constituency so largely composed of farmers. He is very popular, and his success is looked forward to with confidence. —Dominion.
