WATERSIDE WORKERS.
UNION FEES -AND LEVIES. The Minister of Labour (Hon. G. J. Anderson), who on Thursday had been asked by Mr J. A. Nash (Palmerston) to make a statement about the fees which waterside workers were required to pay to the Waterside Workers’ Union at Wellington, did so yesterday afternoon in Parliament. In a recent Court ease, said the Minister, it had been stated that a union member had to pay fees and levies totalling £2 9s A He under-V----stood that the entrance fee was ss. Their if the applicant for membership joined before a certain month n year’s subscription in advance was required. This was £l. If the applicant joined after .the month in question, the subscription was 10s 6d. Then there -were sundry levies which brought the total up to £2 9s. The legality of these charges had been' investigated, and apparently the union had a perfect’ right to make them. He understood that £1 was destined for the general fighting fund. Mr Nash: Oh, now we’re getting it. The Minister added' that he fancied the House would have an opportunity of expressing ap opinion on the whole matter. One of the Labour members, Mr W. E. Parry (Auckland Central), wished to question the Minister about the fees charged by the Land Agents’ Assocation for membership, but Mr Anderson was not to be drawn. He informed thp member that land agents’ fees were not within his province. *
