THE SECOND CUT.

CASES OF HARDSHIP TO BE INQUIRED INTO. Wellington, July 11. In reply to Mr Sullivan in the House of Representatives to-day, Mr Massey said that if eases of hardship to married men arose under the second cut in civil servants’ bonuses those cases could be inquired into by the committee set up for that purpose under the Act. . In reply to Mr H. Poland the Hon. D. H. Guthrie said that the second cut in the Railway Department would be equal throughout all grades. In the course of his speech in the Address-in-Reply debate Mr J. A. Young (Waikato) said that the. cut in public servants’ salaries was inevitable to make the public expenditure come within the revenue. The only possible alternative was wholesale dismissals in the public service of which he did not approve. Mr J. R. Hamilton (Awarua) said that the cut in the public service salaries was an unpopular step and it needed a courageous man to take that step. For that reason the country k as a whole was glad that the man at the head of affairs was strong enough to take it in face of the approaching elections. '~^ = ,
