The Children’s Ball, under the auspices of All Saints’ Ladies Guild, will be held in the Town Hall on Friday, August 4th at 7 p.m.
The vital statistics for Foxton for June with the figures for the same month last year in parenthesis, are as follows: —Births, 0 (9); deaths, 1 (2); marriages, 1 (1). Mr Wilford, leader of the Liberal opposition, stated in the House yesterday that the Party was opposed to the P. and T. Association affiliating with, the Alliance of Labour.
Mr E. Newman, M.P., has presented to Parliament a petition of the Shannon Co-operative Cash Trading Society and 57 others for inquiry into their claims as to the Government’s liability in respect to a bankrupt caterer at Mangaliao. While motoring from Palmerston last Tuesday Mr P. W. Brown’s car collided with a car coining round a corner about half a mile on the Foxton side of the Palmerston railway station. Both,cars were more or less damaged and Mr C. Prew, one of the occupants of Mr Brown’s car, was thrown out and dislocated his shoulder. It is rumoured that an endeavour will be made to consolidate the Waikato Maori interests in a single candidate to meet the formidable opposition expected from young Katana, son. of the faith-healer, who seek.s to represent the constituency. Sir Maui Pomare is in the Waikato and hopes to get the support of the Maniapoto tribes. The Taumarunui Borough Council’s loan of £47,000 for the Borough hydro-electric power -scheme has been obtained through the A.M. P. Society, Wellington, at (5 per cent., issued at par without any procuration fee or other expenses for floatation, the term of the loan being for 21 years. The laying of the water mains in Main Street by Mr Reid’s “flying squadron” is much appreciated by business people, despite the cutting up of the footpath and the unavoidable treading in of spoil. The knowledge that a good supply of water will be available in case of an outbreak of lire is causing general relief.
The death took place at Palmerston North yesterday of Mr W. J. Phillips, one of the best-known (inures in racing circles on this Coast. The late Mr Phillips was a farmer of many years’ standing in the Sanson district. In the world of sport .Mr Phillins had a reputation for the keenness of his interest in racing and a high sense of honour. He was ‘a member both of the Bulls Pacing Club and the Feildmg Jockey Club. He was also a member if the Manawatu Count'- Con oil. I'he deceased gentleman was also well-known in 'Masonic circles, being a bolder of office in the Grand Lodge. Ho was- 58 years of age and leaves a widow to mourn her loss. The interment will take place at Sanson on Monday.
Wednesday was the eighth aniversary of the event which acted as the spark to the' international gunpowder in Europe—The assassination of the Archduke Francis Ferdinand, the heir, to the Imperial throne- of Austria, and his wife. The Imperial pair were [laying a visit to Sarajevo, in Servia, on 28th lune, 1914 and, in their drive through the streets, were twice attacked. While they were motoring ,o the Town Hall a bomb was thrown by one Cabrinovieh. It missed the Imperial ear, but injured a number if bystanders. After the municipal reception the Archduke and Archduchess were driving to the military hospital whenfa "Serbian ' student named Princep fired two shots with a revolver, fatally wounding both. The notorious ultimatum to Serbia followed within the succeeding" month. ,
