Manawatu Herald SATURDAY, JULY 1, 1922. PUSH ON!
THE .splendid progress made by the men employed in laying the water mains in Main Street since Tuesday last, under the supervision of Mr Reid, is a practical demonstration of what can be accomplished under capable guidance. While it is unfair to compare the work done with a smallemgang, it cannot be denied, and we‘ believe the comparative cost will show that a great saving has been accomplished under the present system. , We believe the public generally will endorse the attitude taken up by Or. Alex. Ross and those who supported him in promoting a bold policy in the Council as against the Mayor’s cautious attitude. To go to the Government, in the present circumstances as suppliants for an increase of loan money for work which is of vital importance to the health and prosperity of the community, while still keeping within a time-expired restricted money limit, is utterly futile. There is work for the unemployed on the water and drainage scheme and provided the Council gives evidence of its determination to push on, the £IO,OOO wifi not. be withheld.. ..Waiting cap in hand for blessings to come doesn’t pay when dealing with Ministerial heads. . However, it is hoped as a _ result of the Mayor’s visit to the Minister of Finance and the forceful arguments adduced will result in the needful being supplied and that the water and drainage scheme will be proceeded with a little more expeditiously than in the past. We do not believe there is anything to be gained by prolonging the work at the rate of £5,000 per annum.
