The 'game started at a cracking pace, and Manawatu were soon hammering away at the home team’s goal line. The first score came from a penalty kick, when Swainson piloted the ball over the bar. It was a splendid kick from an angle at a considerable distance. Five minutes later Dustin picked up the hall from the loose, and transferred to Rose, who passed to Bramwell. The last-mentioned player beat his man cleverly, making a fine openng for Leeder to whom he passed, the ball. : The kick,- from a difficult angle, -was taken by ' Swainson, but the ball missed the objective by a shade. In the ensuing play, after an interchange of kicks, a Horowhenua player kicked hard and high. Boddy stood ready to receive the ball but McDonald (Horowhenua) followed up fast, took the ball out of his arms, and scored. The major points were added, and the score stood 6 —5. Horowhenua continued to attack, and from a scrum near the line the ball came out from the hookers ip the Horowhenua half. He worked the blind successfully, and sent his wing galloping across at the corner. The kick failed. Then Moynihan on the Horowhenua wing put in a great run, cutting right through the opposing backs. He scored near the corner, and the attempt to convert, failed. The score now stood at: Horowhenuall, Manawatu 6. Just on half-time the Manawatu backs got away and Mullins scored. The attempt at goal -was fruitless. In the second half the game went up and down field in great style, but neither side was able to cross the line. The final score was thus: Horowhenua 11, Manawatu 9. Mr T. Parata, of Levin, refereed.

With a couple of minutes to go the Maori forwards infusing great sparkle into a rush down-field, overwhelmed Mayne, who fumbled. Rangi Broughton (Horowhenua) snapped up (he leather and literally galloped for the line, scoring with several hanging on to him, amid great excitement. .Jacob. (Horowhenua) converted on -• the call of time. The Maoris were excellent. Though it is unfair to discriminate. Bell, Phillips and Jacob were per—haps the pick.
