DUNEDIN BY-ELECTION.

LABOUR MEMBER ELECTED

Dunedin, Last Night

The by-election to fill the vacancy for the Dunedin North seat, caused by the death of Mr Edward Kellett, was held to-day, in perfect weather, and resulted in the return of Mr J. W. Munro, the official Labour candidate. The actual number on the roll was 11,687, of which 7,568 voted to-day. At the general election in 1919, when Mr Kellett won the seat, 8,762 votes were polled—=4,7B4 for Kellett and 3,978 for the official Labour candidate. Following was to-day’s result :

J. W. Munro (Labour) 3,380 J. J. Clark (In. Reform) 3,239 W. Begg (Liberal) 908 The majority for Munro was 141. Seventy-seven absent voters’ permits have yet to be counted, and there are several declaratory votes. The result of the poll was received by over 1,000 electors, and when Mr Munro appeared he was received with the greatest enthusiasm, the cheering lasting for several minutes. Each of the candidates spoke but their addresses were very short and really confined to returning thanks. It is worthy of note that this is Mr Munro’s sixth attempt to gain Parliamentary honours.
