OBITUARY

R, E. GRAY, AGED 74 YEARS.

The late Mr R. E. Gray whose death we chronicled in our last issue, was born at Louth, England, and arrived in New Zealand by sailing ship in 1879. He spent a short time in Ashhurst prior to coming to Foxton in 1880. He followed the calling of a landscape gardener. The Government plantations on the Himatangi road were planted by Mr Gray and many spots were beautified under his supervision. He took no part in public life but was always willing to assist in any deserving cause and was a lover of children. His cheerful disposition won for him many friends. He •leaves a widow, a sister (Mrs Swift of 'Palmerston) and two nieces, Mesdames Oxley and Spring of Foxton, to mourn their loss. The funeral took place this afternoon, Mr W. D. Bauckham conducted the ceremony at the graveside..
