£5,000 SAFE ROBBERY.
THIEVES ESCAPE IN CAR. A safe weighing seven hundredweight and containing cash to the amount of £5,000 and also deeds relating to buildings, was stolen from the premises of Mr Joseph Lamb, proprietor of the Buffalo Picture Hall, Ashington, Northumberland, recently. Several men were seen carrying the safe, which was wrapped in sacking, and it was thought that they were employed at the place. A car was seen to drive rapidly away in the direction of Newcastle. An explosion was heard at Cramlington aerodrome, about six miles from Ashington, and afterwards the safe was found' smashed up. The contents had been taken away. PolicemerVvgignalled for the car to stop a few miles from Newcastle. It slowed doM'n but on reaching them dashed ahead at full speed. It was found afterwards at a garage in Newcastle. Scotland Yard Police have been called in to aid in the search for the gang. The car has a London index number. Two men have been detained at Newcastle in connection with the robbery.
