(To the Editor.) Sir, —There are a few toilers, like myself, out of work at present and when the men employed on laying the water mains in Main Street knocked off a day before their services were to be dispensed with we would have been, glad to have taken on the job. If some people can afford to throw away, a day’s work that isn’t to say that others would not be willing to go on in their place and finish the job. What’s the use of squealing about no wo'rk when there are men who turn up the job and spoil the chance of others getting a look in. I think, Sir, the Borough Council should take a list of the men who want work and give us all a chance. Surely, Sir, they haven’t spent all the money allocated for this work. A contractor was willing to do the work and gave the Council a price for the job and it was turned down and the Council got turned down for its cleverness. If it’s going to be work at 12/- per day let’s have it until something better turns up. Half a loaf is better than none, and unless some of us get a job soon the country will have to keep us. Thanking you for space, FAMILY MAN. [The Borough Council is shortly to hold .a special meeting to consider what can be done to provide employment on the water and drainage scheme. —Ed.H.]
