FOOTBALL

SATURDAY’S RESULTS

Foxton Seniors 9; Weraroa nil, Foxton Juniors 16 ; Rovers nil. Foxton Thirds 23; Shannon nil Foxton Fourths 49; Farm nil.

The match between the local juniors and Rovers was a very interesting one. Foxton kicked off with the sun in their faces and before many minutes Ball got over the line from a good passing-rush in which Burr and W. Christie materially assisted. Hirini failed to convert. Foxton 3; Rovers, nil. The visitors’ kick from half-way momentarily kept Foxton on the defence until Ball broke away and in a fine solo effort carried play into the visitors’ territory. For an infringement Foxton was penalised and a kick to touch brought Rovers relief. From the throw-ip Foxton secured which 4 gave rise to a good passing-rush, but owing to the tendency of those inside the wing three-quarter to run outwards the attempt to score was nullified. A five-yards scrum from the visitors’ goal-line was ordered and the hall, instead of leaving it by the usual exit came out from the side where Burr hauled it over and registered the second try. His attempt to convert failed. Foxton G; Rovers nil. To the end of the first spell no further score was registered. On resuming, Rovers determined to equalise the scores but luck failed them and for the most part of the latter spell they were rarely within striking distance. From a throw-in W. Christie secured and transferred to Hirini who_ passed to King but the hitter player knocked on. Play at this stage remained between no man’s land and the visitors 25 line where give and take play was the order until a lineout was given. From this Foxton got the ball which passed through the hands of W. Christie, Hirini twice, Currie and Darcy Ball who raced over the line in fine style. The attempt to convert proved fruitless. Foxton 9 f Rovers nil. ' From the half-way kick Foxton immediately returned to the attack with another passing-rush which went astray in midfield about in the visitors 25 where W. Christie smartly gained possession and polled the oval over the bar and between the uprights. Foxton 13; Rovers nil.

From the half-way kick Foxton came again and before the end of the spell Currie, vith Darcy Ball in attendance scored from a good passing-rush in which the leather was handled by W. Christie, Hirini and King. The kick at goal failed. Foxton 1C; Rovers nil. Mr Stan. Reeves, as referee gave entire satisfaction.

NOTES. (By Koata). Darcy Ball undoubtedly strengthened the local Juniors last Saturday. His side-stepping and inward running were very effective and with an experienced centre to feed him a cricket score would have resulted. \Y. Christie, at half, was “a perfect wonder.” His fielding the ball, passing and rush-stopping, and doing the correct- thing at an opportune time were features of the match. The lad is deserving of promotion.

Hirini’s fielding in the first spell was very erratic .but in the second lie reverted to his old style of play, which made things very lively and interesting.

C. Procter, at full-hack, was a bit off colour and did not play up to his usual form due no doubt, to his injured ankle. The remainder of the backs played honestly and well, although they did not shine as conspicuously as the others yet they did much towards the success of the combination. They lacked practice which is very necessary to success.

In the van, Cummerfield and J. Christie showed out very prominently. They were always in the thick of it, More vail be heard of these two.

Burr was always a game little forward but generally speaking I lie major portion of his bustle was frustrated by the amalgamation of back and forward play at inopportune times.

The rest of the forwards did much to make the game for Fox! on a popular win. “Bronco” brings prominently before the “sporting fraternity” this fact that, from the respective grades which make up the Foxton Football Club, four wins on the same day have been registered with an aggregate number of points totalling 97 as against nil. This tends to make the Club’s success significant. THIRD GRADE.

FOXTON.£3;.(SHANNON NIL. This game was played on the No. 2 ground and the spectators were treated to a fast and open exhibition. The first spell was fast and evenly contested and not until ten minutes before the whistle sounded half-time did Foxton break through the Shannon defence, when Burling succeeded in crossing the line. Huff failed to convert. Foxton 3; Shannon nil. The second spell opened up very brightly"and‘'tlie' Foxton boys, with their superior condition over-ran the Shannon team and put on four more tries, all of which were converted by Huff. This player will be the makings of a good kick when he gets a little more practice and confidence. The back play of the local team can be improved with practice when they will become a formidable combination. Burling’s try in the

first half was the result of good forward play whilst in the second half all the tries but one came from the backs. McKnight’s try was a good forward one in which all the forwards took part but from that out the backs took charge and Sammy McGregor crossed the line after the ball had passed through the hands of all the. backs. McGregor’s run was a good one nevertheless. Huff’s try was a pretty piece of work and so was F. Robinson’s. It must not be overlooked that Mcßreatv assisted in all these scores.

For the winners, Burling is a good Scorer and will score if given the opportunity. Mcßreaty seemed to be the all round man of the team. This player should be either fiveeighths or centre and kept in one position as a player can not be expected to play anywhere on the field. Mcßreaty would make a good second five-eighths. H. Walls at half did really well and got the ball out to YVnki Baker. Whilst in the forwards Neville was always on the ball. At wing forward Unvin is in the right place but lie should enthuse a little more dash in getting up to throw the ball in. Proctor and Morgan are also worthy of mention.

For the loser, King at half did well, as also did Clapham at fiveeighths, whilst their mi nature fullback, Holden, played really well. In the forwards McDonald, Golev and Bmve were easily the best. Mr G. Dunn refereed and gave, a good interpretation of the rules.

The Juniors did well on Saturday by turning the tables on the team that previously defeated them. They must not rest on Saturday’s laurels but if they are to annex the championship they must practice, and practice strenuously. The team is requested to turn out for moonlight practice on Wednesday and Thursday nights and to keep tit for the remainder of the season.
