PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH.

A'ALEDICTORY SOCIAL

The Presbyterian schoolroom ; was filled to its utmost capacity on Tuesday evening by a representative gathering when the congregation tendered a farewell social to the Rev. and Mrs Halliday. Mr Hornblow occupied lie chair and seated on the platform were the guests and the Mayor (Mr -John Clirystall) and the church secretary, Mr John Ross. The proceedings opened with the National Anthem followed by a much appreciated and excellent concert programme as follows: —Instrumental overture, Misses Patterson and Stevenson; songs by Mesdames Slade, Austin, Daniel!, Freeman, Misses Wyatt, Bessie Ebbett, Messrs Clirystall. Tong and Henderson: Miss Belle Pearson and one-string fiddle solos by Air Chas. Simmons. The accompaniments were played by Alesdames Freeman, Cunninghame, and Misses Patterson and Ebbett. Several recalls were demanded. The chairman Mayor, Alessrs Speirs (elder) and Jno. Ross referred in eulogistic terms to the work done in connection with the church by the departing minister and Airs Halliday, the Mayor making special reference to Mr Halliday’s connection with public organisations. On behalf of the eongergation Air Ross presented Mr Halliday with a leather suit case and Airs Halliday with a cheque. Mr lan Ross spoke on behalf of the Bible Class and Choir.

In responding to the speeches and acknowledging the gifts, Mr Halliday said that he had given of his best. He urged the congregation to stand loyally by bis successor. At (lie conclusion “Auld Lang Sync” was heartily sung and cheers given for the guests.

A telegram of apology for absence was received from the Rev. Air. W. Walton (Anglican) also expressing his best wishes for Air Holliday’s success in his new sphere of labour. The ladies provided a tasty suptier at the conclusion.
