THE SHANNON BRIDGE

At the request of Mr Murdock, Mayor of Shannon, Mr Edward Newman, M.P., has for some time past been in communication with the Hon. Mr Coates, Minister of Public Works, with a view to fixing a date on which the Minister will receive a deputation from the local bodies interested, in order that the question of protection of the bridge over the Manawatu river, near Shannon, from erosion and decay may be discussed. Owing to the Minister’s engagements it has been found impossible for him to see a deputation as early as has been urged, but Mr Newman has now been advised that Mr Coates will be able to meet the local bodies’ representatives in Wellington on Tuesday, June 13, at 2.30 p.m. The present condition of this bridbe and its approaches are such that the question of repairs, extension, and protection of the river banks must be considered m.ost ur-gent,-and it is hoped that the result of the interview with the Minister of Public Works will preve satisfactory.
