FOOTBALL.
At a meeting of the Horowhenua Union on Wednesday night, the transfer of W. Wakefield from the Shannon to the Weraroa Club was gi'anted. The Foxton Club forwarded a protest against the referee extending the time in the junior match, Tokomaru-Foxton, played at- Foxton on Saturday. The Foxton Club, alleged that Tokomaru scored after the lapse of the 40 minute spell. The referee, Mr Randell, wrote explaining that the second spell was extended by eight minutes owing to the encroachment of the spectators on, the field of play, and the game had to be suspended on several occasions in order to clear the lines. He also complained of the behaviour of the spectators towards the referee, and the condition v - of the ground, which had not been marked. Mi- Percy, president of the* Referees’ Association, said the Union must accept, the statement of the referee, and moved that the protest be disallowed on the ground that the referee was the sole judge of time. This was carried.
T. Wehipeihana reported W. Marino, of Te Horo, for kicking a player in the third grade match with Hui Mai. It was resolved' that Ma-’Y'l ri'no be ordered to stand down and send an explanation of his conduct.
Mr Whibley protested against the method of selecting the Horowhenua rep. team. The Foxton selector was informed that the team would be picked at 8 o’clock last Saturday in Levin. That was quite' inconvenient, and he considered the selection could have been made after the senior match in Levin, about 6 p.m. I his was not done, and Mr Desmond had to return home to Foxton, and took no part in the selection. Anther point, two emergency backs an, l two l'orvvards were picked, and when one of the rep. bucks notified that Re could not play, Messrs Sevan and Wehipeihana, the local selectors, went outside the emergencies and brought in another back. Mr Bevan said the selectors de- = sired to see as many of Saturday’s games as possible, and went to Shannon. It was much after 6 o clock when he got back to Levin, and as Mr Desmond had gone home, he and Mr Wehipeihana then selected the team. The bringing in of an outside player as half-back was necessary as McDonald, of Levin, could not play, and Utiku, of Otaki, uas asked to come up because he v. as experienced in that position and " the other two emergency backs were not.
