BOROUGH COUNCIL.
‘FORTNIGHTLY MEETING,
The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last night. NOTICE OF MOTION. Cr. Ross moved his notice of motion that the Council meetings be held monthly instead of fortnightly in the future, on the second Monday in each month at 7 p.m., seconded by Cr. Thompson. Cr. Martin opposed the motion. He said that there was still plenty of work to justify the • fortnightly meetings.
The Mayor said if there was an accumulation of wprk at any time special meetings could be called. The motion was carried, Crs. Martin, Rand, and Whibley voting against.
CORRESPONDENCE Was read and dealt with as follows: From the Shannon Borough Council enclosing plan of Manawatu River at the Shannon Bridge and a report, on same. Also stating that delegates including the Engineer and Mayor would proceed to Wellington to interview the Minister of Public Works on- the matter and to ask that the local bodies be contributors in equitable proportion for the necessary protection of the bridge, road, etc. The Mayor moved, seconded by Cr. Coley, that the letter be received and that- the Council is of the opinion that the report is hot sufficiently comprehensive, inasmuch as no estimate of costs .is included. —Carried.
From the Willard Home- soliciting financial assistance on behalf of the institution.
Decided to grant the Home £2 2s.
From the Beautifying Society recommending that the old Maori Cemetery be re-named “Ibakara Gardens” and stating that as certain improvements are about to be carried out there, the Council erect a rest-room for ladies.
Decided that the request re restroom cannot he acceded to as the Council has no jurisdiction over the ground.
From the Foxton Association Football Club, requesting that the Council allow them to form a ground on Victoria Park suitable for playing Association football on. Decided that permission be granted subject to the pleasure of the Council. The Club to pay the Council -ten per cent, of the gate receipts. From the Foxton Volunteer Fire Brigade asking for information regarding the formation of the Fire Board and requesting a refund of amount expended on chemicals procured for the engine.—Held over. From the Gore Borough Council, forwarding the following resolution for the Council’s co-operation and support at the next Municipal Conference: —“That all the amusement taxes collected in the<» district be paid over to the local body of that district or Town Board as the case may lie.”
Decided to support the motion, Cr. Martin voting against. , From the Timaru Borough Council, forwarding a copy of a resolution passed at a meeting of the Timaru Borough Council stating:— “That the Government be asked to abolish the present undemocratic system of constituting Electric er Boards on the petition of onefourth of the ratepayers, and that the Government be asked 'to provide that all proposals to form Electric Power Boards shall be decided by a. poll of the ratepayers in each proposed constituent district, as a poll affords a fetter opportunity of discussing tqe pros, and consi of the proposal, and as a result ascertaining the wishes of the ratepayers and that all local authorities in the Dominion be asked to support this request. { Decided to support the motion. In reply to the Racing Club re erecting a lamp, at the corner of Whyte Street, it was decided owing to the expense the Council cannot accede to the request. UNHEALTHY DRAIN.
Cr. Martin moved that the attention of the Health Department be drawn to the drain at the rear of the residences at the south end of Francis and Johnstone Streets. Cr Martin said that there had been several complaints about the drain. It.was blocked with decaying vegetable matter.— to call a±tenj(on pf, .the Health Department to the matter. ENGINEER'S REPORT.
' 'The'Bbrough Engineer (Mr King) Reported as 'follows at last night’s Council meeting:— Water Tower. —The contractor has commenced concreting the topper tank.
Water Pipe*' Laying.—The Bin. mains from the pump house to the town main and from the tower to the town main have been completed and a start made on the main from Union Street towards the Family Hotel. A portion of the mains have been tested by water pressure from the pump and the work done has been satisfactory and the pump has worked satisfactorily. Ucm kjkj f/uu in nauui Septic and Collecting Tanks.— The work of concreting the floor of the collecting tank is in hand. Connecting Artesian Wells.—No further work has been done on this. Mr Reid will take this work in hand as the opportunity offers. The report was adopted.
