BOROUGH COUNCIL

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held last night.. A letter was read from the Racing Club asking ihatija street lamp be placed at the corner of Whyte and Johnstone Streets. Decided that estimates for erecting same be obtained and submitted to the next meeting. ROAD FOREMAN’S REPORT.

During the past month The road staff have been engaged on the following work: —Cleaning drains in Norbiton Road, Coley, Putter, Union Purcell and Baker Streets and Avenue Road east of Spring Street; patching ruts in Johnstone, Flitter, and Park Streets and Ladies Mile; taking off spoil and top dressing Clyde Street with tar and coke ash, and general maintainance work. The drains are now practically finised. We obtained sufficient tar to complete asphalting of Clyde Street, to a width of 24 fjget. I would recommend that when material is available we asphalt that portion of Clyde Street used as a s tan cl for motor cars down as far as the garage. The woi’k for the present month will include metalling, on various roads, weeding of water tables and general maintenance work. Adopted.

Mr Hornblow waited on the Council . and asked that an adjustment be made in an estimate for the laying of 11 inch gas pipe to the premises of the Manawatu Herald Office, the cost of same to be from the nearest point of connection with the main. v.. The facts of the ease were pointed out by the Town Clerk who said that the neai’est main was about- 100 ft. from the fi-ont of the office but on the other side of the road. The only other way to lay the. gas*on was from Ravensworth Place, a distance of 280 ft. To connect with the Main Street main meant cutting up. the l’oad. ; Cr. Coley said that he doubted if (he Cpuncil could make any other charge than ti*om. the Main Street main as it was the nearest point of connection.

“Cl’s. Ross, Martin and Whibley agreed that it was only a fair request and it was decided - that application for a new service be ac-ceded-to, the account as rendered to be based on the actual cost to the Council plus 5 per cent, supervision expenses, as if the connection had been made from the nearest point, namely from the 4in. main on the east side of Main Street.
