The apparatus has worked exceedingly well and the four setting of retorts is giving good working results. T •have had most of the six setting taken down and will have everything in readiness for the retort setter. I have had to draw ihe girders on this bed up and tie them with angle irons as they had sprung and were not supporting the hydraulic main. Now this is -ecurelV fitted on to he girders. The fire-bricks and retorts have arrived but several lots are broken and the Town Clerk lias written the makers about them. I have purchased a little Australian coal, which t I think will warrant the extra cost, as we can get 1,500 to 1,600 e.ft. more per ton and I might add that several times during the month 1 had to put this coal in the retorts alone as the other slack was so very wet as to make it hard lo keep up the supply.’ Several lamps have been turned out after he lamplighter has lit them this month. Also one at the corner, of Duncan Street has been lit during the day. The Mayor in moving the adoption nf the report said that he had viewed the fire-bricks and, to sav the least, they bad arrived at the works in a shocking condition. It was impossible to .say whether the damage had been done on the Dunedin-Wel-lington or the Wellington-Foxton run. The report was adopted.
