The first of May was yesterday. In England it is a gala day. Boys and girls, young and aged, cut loose from the humdrum things, and romp around a gaily heribboncd Maypole, decked with May of the hawthorn.

At the recent Footballers Ball, Miss Meg Cimino, of Wellington, delighted those present with a gracefully executed dance. Extra dance music was olayed by Mrs Davey and Miss McDonnell.

At last night's meeting of householders, Mr Hornblow referred to Mr Geo. Coley's service as a committeeman extending over a. period of 2f> years. Not only had Mr Coley given his services freely but he had been a generous giver—none more so. Speaking for himself he said he had served on the committee for the past fifteen years, with only one break of one year as chairman. While lie would continue to take an interest in the school and educational matters generally, this was to be his last year in office. These remarks were received with applause and dissent. /

No plan yet devised and put into operation by legislation lias come, anywhere near to attaining the object sought to be gained, namely, the adjustment of disputes between' employers and workers on a basis of mutual understanding and concession. One reason for this —and possibly the most troublesome one is—lhe fact that socialists, communists, anarchists, and null-eon tents of all kinds who hale work in any form and are evfer scheming to avoid it, and yet live comfortably, early dis-' covered that the most fertile field for their propaganda and personal profit was provided by organised labour, and they have by persistent scheming over a number of years practically obtained control of nearly all Labour Unions.—Carterton •‘News.”

Rays iln' Palmerston Times: — "The completion of the water tower at Foxron marks a new era of comparative safety from lire. \The sandy soil must have given some anxiety as to the security of the foundations. When nearly four hundred tons of water is added to the weight of the structure these require to be substantial. At Hawera, in volcanic soil, the engineer found that the first influx of water caused a cant of several inches:.but wisely, he kept this a secret, until it was again made upright by skilful undermining and letting down the other side.” There is no fear of a similar fault in the Foxton tower.
