CONFLAGRATION IN PALMERSTON.
TWO SHOPS GUTTED. Palmerston, To-day. A fire was discovered at ten minutes to two o’clock this morning at Mr J. H. Watts’ cycle depot, In the Square, Palmerston North. The shop was ablaze from end to end, and was threatening the neighbouring premises, occupied by the Universal Supply Company’s grocery store on the one side and the fruit shop occupied by Joe Kwong On on the other.
A large stock of tyres in the. upper story burned fiercely, and rendered quite futile any attempt to save the building. Well-directed streams of water prevented the blaze from spreading to the garage of Messrs Adam’s, Ltd. The''thick glass windows of which were smashed by the heat.
In less than half an hour the fire was subdued, only the two shops above mentioned being burnt out, those of the adjoining premises suffering more from the water, with which they were deluged. The premises are owned by the Waldegrave Estate, and the insurances are held by the New Zealand Insurance Company, but to what amount is.not yet ascertainable.
