Manawatu Herald THURSDAY, MARCH 30, 1922. OCCUPATION AND FREEHOLD.
IN order to provide a sufficient area to accommodate all branches- of healthy 'outdoor sports on Easton Park, a “gift” of two iicres adjoining t lie northern boundary has been made to the Borough Council. Those responsible for this generous and public-spirited act are deserving of all thanks. The transfer of the land to the Borough Council, however, is of whatever interest those in' “occupation” may have in the area. We understand that it is hot a conveyance of the fee simple. This means that before the Council obtains the title it must, complete negotiations and obtain the consent of all the Natives interested in the ownership of the land. This may or may not be a difficult procedure, but it is as well to face the facts. In the meantime the Council will enter into occupation of the land to meet the demands of sport clubs, with a full knowledge of future responsibility. [Since the above was written we are informed that the offer of the land has been withdrawn.,]
