BOROUGH COUNCIL.

At last night’s Council /meeting correspondence was read and dealt witti as follows :■ —; From Messrs Ross, Rough and Qo. t stating that to allow the Council to get control and be able for all time to do protective work on the hill adjacent to the water tower, they suggest that the Council hand over to them the reserve in the corner of Johnston and Purcell Streets in exchange for an equal area adjacent to the water tower hill site, the line to he mutually agreed upon. The Company are prepared to make the line so that.it would give frontage to Union Street, which could be used possibly as a site for sub-sta-tion for the hydro-electric system. Decided that the matter of additional land near the site of the tower, as an exchange, be referred to the Public Works Committee, to report at the next ordinary meeting of the Council.

From the Levin-Greatford Deviation Committee, forSvarding details of the Council’s share of expense ineurred, amounting to £2O.

T The 1 Mayojt said that, he was glad the Commijaee had pursued the course they had. The allocation of expenses was a mere bagatelle as against, the satisfaction of knowing that they had delayed the work for at least twelve months and saved the country great expense. The £2O was well spent. He considered it was one of he biggest blots on the Reform Government to support the Palmerston deviation as against the Levin-Greatford link of the main trunkline.

Decided to pay the £2O. From the Beautifying Sociefy. asking that the Harbour Street road l>e completed, as the Society wished to beautify the river'bank. —Received.

From the Napier Council, Asking that this Council support them in their request .that the Government he asked to introduce legislation pmyiding that the credit balance of loan accounts he set off by the banjas against the debit balances on other accounts, as regarding payment of interest on the latter accounts. Decided to support the Napier Council.
