The old theory that elephants respond to kindness may be sound enough; but whether the elephant’s idea of a proper recognition is the same as a man’s may be doubted. A New Plymouth resident is reported to have bad an experience which should serve as a'warning. He fed a big circus elephant with apples, and after he had given it a second Tot, the beast expressed his gratitude by picking the benefactor up by the legs and “wiping the floor” with him. The action may be good manners in the jungle, but it is unpleasant in a tent.
