BOWLERS AND THE DRAKE SPIRIT.
The immortal Drake was a bowler. Every English school boy is familiar with the fact that the great Admiral was engaged in a game of howls when he was informed that the Spanish Armada was healing up the Channel. He calmly finished his game before setting out on his task to accomplish a great victory. Are till bowlers possessed of the Drake spirit? How often do they leave lhe green to face a domestic battle? We won’t labour this delicate point! Last night a special meeting of the Council was called for 7.30 o’clock to receive the report of the Town Hall Committee on matters of municipal moment. At the time members of the vital committee were engaged in a game of howls, quite oblivious of all else. The Drake spirit enwrapped them, the darkness fell, hut the game proceeded —and was finished by the aid of candle-light. When they arrived at the solemn conclave, the business of the evening was well forward, but they arrived in time to assist in adopting their recommendations.
