RIFLE SHOOTING.
The annual competition of West Coast Rifle Clubs for the Field Shield was held at Hautere Cross (near Otaki) on Saturday, the weather being fine andJiot. Five teams of 8 men competed, conditions being 7 shots and sighter at. 300, 500 and 000 yards. The Ngatiawa Club won the Shield, with the fine total of 701 out of a possible 840. Other clubs represented were Levin, Hautere, Paraparanmu and Foxton, and finished in that order. Weather conditions were very trying —a heat mirage and a very tricky light breeze from-the right rear. On account of the Hautere and other ranges facing east, conditions of light and wind were directly opposite to (those experienced on the Foxton range, which faces west; so that the local team were shooting under a. big desadvantage in this respect. An eleventh-hour alteration had to be made in the Foxton team, and those who competed, with their scores, were as follows Yds. 300 500 600 Tl.
