SCAFFOLDING TRAGEDY.
AUCKLAND FIRM FINED. Auckland, Last Night. The aftermath of the recent fatal, accident in Endean’s Buildings was an allegation by Mr Lightfoot, inspector of scaffolding, that Mr K. R. Taylor (of J. Henderson and Co.) committed a breach of the Scaffolding Act by failing to give 24 hours’ notice of his intention to erect the scaffolding. A plea of not guilty was entered on behalf of the defendant. Mr Endean, in evidence, spoke of a custom which ha_d long prevailed in Auckland, by which persons about to erect scaffolding sent in notice and often proceeded to put up the stagings on the same - day. The facts of the case could scarcely be disputed* As the Bench remarked, they were quite clear. Notice on a recognised form was produced, and the Magistrate pointed out it had been sent in on the morning of the day of tile accident. At request of counsel, a fine of £5 Is was inflicted. Security for appeal was fixed at £ls, plus the fine and costs.
